Sloppy, out-of-tune performances are a thing of the past: modern pitch-shifting technology can put them right in the studio. Mark Cousins gets manipulative.

The ability to manipulate and correct pitch has been an important tool for engineers and producers throughout the history of recording. The earliest technique simply involved adjusting the playback speed of a reel-to-reel recorder; today we have sophisticated and flexible pitch-correction software. A typical modern studio will have various pitch-correction technologies, each with its own benefits and unique sonic attributes. It’s also interesting to note how pitch-correction technology is challenging accepted norms concerning the flexibility of recorded information.
