Resynthesis is one of the most intriguing concepts now becoming more readily accessible to the contemporary sound designer. Mark Cousins explains its finer details.

Although most musicians tend to stick to the relative comfort of subtractive synthesis, there’s a wealth of alternative synthesis methods that are gaining in popularity and assuming more relevance in music production. One such technique is resynthesis – a branch of synthesis that has actually been in existence for more than 70 years but has been given a new lease of life through software instruments such as Virsyn’s Cube and Camel Audio’s Cameleon 5000 and Alchemy. But what is resynthesis, and what benefits does it offer over other techniques?
