10MM 164 - Low-frequency Oscillators
The low-frequency oscillator is one of the most important modulation sources available. Mark Cousins takes the low road.

From synthesizers to chorus units and stompboxes, the lowfrequency oscillator (LFO) is an omnipresent component in sound design and signal processing. Although derived from a conventional audio oscillator, an LFO is actually a form of ‘modulator’ – much like an envelope generator or modulation wheel – that modifies the properties of a sound. Whether you’re aware of its presence or not, the LFO is integral to many signature sounds, from the distinctive wobbling of tremolo to the ‘swoosh’ of a flanger.
