Quantizing has become an essential part of MIDI and audio sequencing – and it’s vital for solving a range of timing issues. Mark Cousins polishes his performance.

One of the biggest benefits that MIDI sequencing has brought us is the capability to quantize a performance. Indeed,so accustomed have we become to the power of quantize and its ability to rectify even the most shoddy of performances that it’s difficult (if not impossible) to produce music without it. Today’s quantizing tools have become increasingly diverse, offering a surprising degree of control over the timing and ‘tightness’ of both audio and MIDI data, as well as enabling us to retain – if not enhance – the feel and groove of a piece of music.
