M/S processing has been an integral part of mastering since the early days of stereo recording. Mark Cousins sums up the differences.

During the process of mastering an engineer will use a variety of tricks and techniques to transform a raw session mix into a finished, production-ready master. One such technique that’s been gaining increasing popularity is M/S mastering, with a number of plug-ins – including Waves’ Center, various Brainworx plug-ins and Ozone 4 – now supporting the possibility of processing a two-track master using so-called ‘middle’ and ‘side’ components. But what exactly is M/S mastering and what are its benefits over conventional stereo mastering?
