10MM 174 - EQ Types
From parametric equalisers through to shelving and phase-linear designs, EQ comes in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Mark Cousins finds the right frequency.

Along with compression, equalisation forms the cornerstone of an effective mix, helping to shape the key timbral qualities of any sound that’s present in the overall balance of sound. It’s no surprise, therefore, to find a number of different types of EQ – from simple shelving equalisers on a budget audio mixer through to the complicated fully parametric designs found on large studio consoles. As you’d expect, each different design of EQ has its own sound and its own unique strengths and weaknesses.
