Even though surround sound is becoming more common within the home thanks to the home-cinema boom, stereo is still the most common way of delivering and listening to music. Stereo is an incredibly portable and resilient format that’s compatible with a wide range of listening environments – radio broadcasts, on headphones, in cars – and it has the potential for upmixing into surround. So when working in the studio or on location, when is it applicable to actually record in stereo and what techniques are suitable for different applications?
