Choosing a microphone with the appropriate polar response is vital to capturing a performance in the most effective way. In essence, the different polar patterns provide a form of directional sensitivity, enabling you to angle a microphone towards the aspects you’re interested in capturing – the instrument – while rejecting unwanted elements such as room noise, instrument bleed, other musicians and so on.
