The ubiquitous multiband compressor has become synonymous with the task of mastering, squeezing and refining every last decibel of dynamic range within a recording. From dedicated hardware units like TC Electronic’s Finalizer through to a multitude of mastering compressors now included as standard in most DAWs, the multiband compressor has made a big impact in many studios and had a big influence on how modern music sounds. But why have multiband compressors become so desirable (especially by comparison to the many perfectly competent single-band compressors that have been used for years) and exactly how do they work their magic?
