From humble beginnings, the software sampler has become one of the most powerful and demanding components of the modern studio. When once a ‘samplist’ might have struggled with just a few megabytes of memory, today’s user has access to almost limitless memory, plus a wealth of mapping options and sample streaming technology that enables them to create highly realistic and expressive sample-based instruments. Today’s software samplers, therefore, are considerably different from their hardware-based forefathers. But what are the key technologies they offer?
