10MM 187 - Audio signal levels explained
Analogue audio signals come in several different flavours and it’s good practice to understand the various types. Grant Bridgeman makes comparisons.

Even though most audio processing in the project studio happens within the internals of a computer – or ‘in the box’, as it is phrased – it is still necessary to send analogue signals in and out of the digital domain – even if simply to listen back to your current project, be it through headphones or studio monitors. There is a wide variety of types of audio signal both in the analogue and digital domains, and each is sufficiently different to cause problems when trying to match signals and align levels. It is not enough just to try to match the types of connector, as in most cases the actual type of connector is completely irrelevant to the signal passing through the cable.
