10MM 190 - The Vocoder
From Mr Blue Sky to the voice of the Cylons, the vocoder has delivered some intriguing and unusual sounds. Mark Cousins takes a listen.

The history and evolution of the vocoder is one of the most interesting stories in the development of music technology. Indeed, few devices in the studio can claim to have first been used by Winston Churchill, inspired defining classics of electronic music (like Kraftwerk’s Autobahn) and, most importantly, have been used to voice the Cylon uprising as part of TV’s Battlestar Galactica! Beyond these cultural and historical milestones, though, the vocoder has remained a unique and fascinating part of the modern studio, offering a distinctive way of transplanting frequency characteristics from one sound to another.
