Sampled string libraries generally offer a good range of articulations, but what exactly are the differences between them? Mark Cousins has the lowdown.

Sampled strings have come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years, with the size of a typical library growing at an almost exponential rate. In just the last year we’ve seen several defining libraries released, including EastWest’s Hollywood Strings, AudioBro’s LASS and Project SAM’s Symphobia 2, all of which bring new levels of realism to software-based sampling. However, the range of different articulations offered as well as the variety of technologies used to trigger them can often seem overwhelming to a first-time user. So, what are the differences between a round-robin collegno and a divisi legato (among others) and how can they be put to best use?
