Despite having only a few notes at their disposal, step sequencers are still an essential tool for electronic music production. Mark Cousins steps out.

By comparison to the all-singing, all dancing modern-day DAW, a humble step sequencer might seem like a rather outmoded bit of synthesis history. Despite being more than 30 years old, however, the step sequencer is held in high regard by many musicians and is still alive and well thanks to programs such as Propellerhead’s Reason and Arturia’s Moog Modular V. But what are the reasons behind this continued interested in step sequencing and what can a step sequencer offer over the typical MIDI sequencing tools we use in our DAWs?
