10MM107 Formants
Formant filters are incredibly powerful tools for shaping sounds, but just how do they work? Grant Bridgeman applies the human touch...

Filtering is a technique that’s used every day in the studio – to the extent that even those who shy away from synthesis usually have some type of filter in their kit bag. The now-familiar guitarist’s wah-wah pedal was arguably the first kind of filter to come into common use, but that original concept has now taken a variety of different forms. Humanizers (or vowel filters) are one such example of an alternative take on filtering, emulating certain characteristics of human speech through the use of formants.
