Despite their relatively individual sounds, chorus, flange and phasing are all part of a group of modulation effects designed to thicken up the sound of an instrument or deliberately manipulate its frequency characteristics over time. They have been the cornerstone of many guitar, keyboard and synth sounds for well over 30 years, and continue to be both desirable and useful additions to a mix, either as a means of warming up a collection of lacklustre backing vocals, for example, or adding interest to a prominent drum fill.
