There’s a great deal of reverance, myth and mystery surrounding ribbon microphones – but not all of it is entirely justified. Ribbon mics certainly have buckets of character – which is in part what makes them so desirable – but in their earliest incarnations, many had arguably too much, to the extent that many could have more accurately been described as temperamental rather than useful.
