Despite all the other revolutions that have occurred in the recording industry over the last 50 years, the recording studio has ultimately needed to deal with only one format stereo. Lets face it: the majority of equipment we use in our studios tends to have a clear bias towards stereo signals the left and right outputs from a hardware synth, the two monitor outputs from a USB audio interface, two-channel stereo amplifiers, 12-2 mixing consoles and so on. Times are changing, however, and an increasing number of audio professionals are required to work in the surround domain, but is the infrastructure of our studio namely, the monitors and master controller suitable for the task?
