Downloadable mp3s are the immediate future for the music industry, but how does its lossy compression affect what we hear? Grant Bridgeman listens carefully.

The capturing and conversion of analogue soundwaves into digital bits is now generally taken for granted – and no more so than when it comes to music saved and played back in the mp3 format. The rise and rise of the personal mp3 player now means that most people use the format, but how these files are created and the affect that the conversion process has on the quality of the audio is something that’s often overlooked or not investigated at all.
