Beats are at the heart of almost all kinds of modern music – especially the kinds of music that people typically make with Live. Drum machines were one of the fi rst type of instrument to be replicated in software format because electronic drums were relatively simple to sample or synthesize, requiring none of the detailed multi-layering that’s needed for re-creating acoustic drums or other instruments. Although virtual drum machines have come a long way, their sounds are not really all that different from how they were back in the early days, even if the software that powers them and the effects they use are rather more sophisticated now.
