The art of comping – creating a composite track representing the best bits from multiple takes – has a long and interesting history in music production. The advent of computer-based editing advanced the craft significantly, not only speeding up the process, but also enabling seemingly limitless numbers of takes, the undoing of failed experiments, and the creation of multiple versions. If it also ushered in the era of skilled engineers propping up cute-but-clueless pop stars… Well, sometimes you’ve got to take the bad with the good, right?
