JoE Silva finds out how rock’s biggest duo crafted the sound for their fifth studio LP.

Ever since they banged out their first hit record in two weeks, it’s been no secret that the guitar-slinging portion of The White Stripes has an affinity for simplicity. And even after that album (2003’s Elephant) went mega, Jack White never settled into the sort of studio debauchery that gave us long-simmered masterpieces such as the second Stone Roses LP.
