Musicians and engineers have always embraced technological progress in the studio, but many look to the past when it comes to mics. Huw Price finds out why.
Modern technology provides us with accurate, low-noise, high-SPL microphones, and common sense tells us that vintage microphones are relics that should have been consigned to museums long ago instead of still being allowed to dump noise all over our pristine digital recordings. So, why aren’t classic microphones a thing of the past? Why are sound engineers and producers – who weren’t even born when the things were made – still using 1950s mics for major recording projects?
