Choosing a Computer
Before splashing out on a new computer, be clear about what you need it to do and whether what’s inside it is up to that task. Hollin Jones goes inside the box.

The majority of people recording and producing music these days are doing so with a computer, or at least using a system in which a computer plays an integral role. From a bare-bones setup comprising a laptop, portable MIDI keyboard and a pair of headphones to professional studios running a full-blown Pro Tools HD system, the computer is central to the tasks of making and recording music. It hasn’t completely taken over, of course – there are still those who prefer alternative technologies such as hard disk recorders or MPC production consoles – but for many people, a computer is the natural choice.
