Ground-breaking in their time and still sought-after today, the synths of yesteryear continue to help define the sound of modern music. Dave Gibson gets to grips with two classics.

Recent advances in technology have provided digital musicians with increasingly complex devices capable of producing almost unimaginable and otherworldly noises as well as accurate emulations of more familiar sounds. However, in order to harness the power of these instruments, it’s important that we understand how we arrived at these techniques. In this series, we take a backwards look at the popular hardware synthesizers of yore and discuss their modern software counterparts, kicking off with two of the most iconic synths of the 1980s: the Roland TB-303 and the Yamaha DX7.
