Convolution
In the few short years since its arrival, convolution has revolutionised audio processing as we know it. Mark Cousins takes a sample of the future.
Every couple of years you’ll hear the rumbles of groundbreaking developments in music technology which eventually lead to a fundamental change in the way we make and record music. In the last decade we’ve seen the rise of hard disk recording and software instruments, but other innovations include the development of MIDI and Dr Robert Moog’s re-packaging of the modular synthesizer as the minimoog. Right now, we appear to be on the crest of a new wave – that of convolution processing, which has brought a whole new meaning to the concept of sampling and access to some fantastic new (and old) sounds.
