Copyright protects the music business as a whole – aspiring artists, big-name stars, independent record companies and the major labels alike. Keith Gemmell explains how it works.
With the rapid growth of the internet and the explosion of digital distribution – in all its forms, not just music – more and more people are becoming concerned about, and increasingly involved in, the issue of copyright protection. In fact, we hear so much about the subject these days that you could be forgiven for thinking that it’s purely a 21st-century phenomenon. However, the first people to raise the issue of copyright were the scholars of Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire – and although they succeeded in achieving due recognition for their efforts, they didn’t actually have any economic rights. In other words, anybody could copy and sell the scholar’s work without asking his permission first. But, of course, without the technology to print the works anyway, the issue of piracy probably didn’t arise.
