In the first instalment of this series – way back in MTM Issue 16 – we took our first look at the creative possibilities of working with the software orchestra – an area that continues to expand as composers and musicians realise just how realistic today’s technology can sound. But the software orchestra is an arena full of unique production challenges, fuelled by the sonic excesses of a full-scale cinematic sound alongside the constant striving for a performance that rivals the real thing. If you can cope with these challenges, however, hearing your first orchestral work realised in the software domain can be an immensely fulfilling experience.
