The software orchestra has finally become a convincing alternative to the real thing. Mark Cousins takes a look at how to get that big Hollywood sound.
When it comes to extravagance there are few things more lavish and expansive than the sound of an orchestra in full swing. Listen to the soundtrack of any Hollywood blockbuster and you’ll soon realise what a pivotal element the orchestra is, and how directors rely on its power and sonic diversity to provide much of the emotional resonance or impact in a scene. There’s only one real drawback with a real orchestra – its enormous cost. So the possibility of realistically recreating an orchestra electronically has been eagerly awaited. Thankfully, creating an orchestra in software is now an option available to us all thanks to the power of applications such as GigaStudio and Logic Pro 6.
