Creative Sampling
Sampling has come a long way since the original digital samplers of the early 80s. Mark Cousins explores what contemporary samplers offer today’s musicians.
It’s hard to think of anything that has been as consistently useful in the studio during the last 20 years as the sampler. Easily the best studio device ever to be ported into the software domain – no more minuscule buttons, poorly lit LCD screens and cheap A/D converters – it now forms the backbone of most contemporary electronic productions, providing a range of sounds unavailable elsewhere. With thousands of samples CDs available, the sampler could be the only musical tool you need: it’s a drum machine, a synth, an orchestra and almost everything else besides.
