The advent of the digital sampler was a landmark in modern music production. The facility to record, manipulate and play back almost any sound at any pitch was revolutionary. But sampling remained the preserve of the well-heeled until the end of the 80s, when companies such as Akai brought to market affordable samplers like the S900. Samplers soon became firmly established as an essential part of a studio’s kit list, and as the technology advanced they have become the instrument of choice for high-quality ‘realistic’ sounds, drum programmingand any number of creative applications.
