Creative use of sidechains in Logic Pro 6

Logic’s versatile routing capabilities extends to its implementation of sidechains. Andrew Taylor-Maskrey takes a closer look...

For many, automatic gain-control devices such as gates, expanders, limiters and compressors have become vital tools in the recording, mixing and broadcast environments. Typically, what these signal processors have in common in the analogue world is the use of a voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) to affect the level of the signal leaving the device. This VCA is normally controlled by the input signal, so, in the case of a compressor, if the input signal goes above a certain level, the output level is reduced; whereas in the case of a gate/expander, when the input falls below a certain level, the output level is reduced.
