Keeping track of data is becoming more of an issue in music technology than it’s ever been before. Ever-growing samples collections and heavier instruments necessitate ever bigger hard drives and more powerful CPUs – and so the cycle continues. And given this abundance of space, we’re less likely to delete things. If you record 20 takes of a guitar part, for example, it’s no strain on your system because the average hard drive is big enough to accommodate them. In a way this is good because you don’t have to worry about running out of space, but it also presents problems of its own.
