Cubase 4 Workshop: Using Free VST Synths
You don’t need to spend a fortune to use lots of synths in Cubase – in fact, it doesn’t have to cost you a penny... Hollin Jones shows you how to make music on a budget.

Virtual Studio Technology – or VST for short – is the oldest and most widely used audio plug-in format for software. Despite the emergence of DXi, Audio Units and others, VST still has the sheer weight of numbers behind it, meaning that practically all manufacturers include it when developing their products. Apart from the many commercial products, a large number of free VSTi’s are also available, covering many musical areas. Developed by small teams and even hobbyists, these range from the wildly esoteric to fully featured general-purpose synths that are often just as competent as some commercial instruments.
