In the world of recording there are two key formats that we musicians use: MIDI and audio. Although the two have been living happily alongside one another for years now, each has always had certain advantages and disadvantages. MIDI has always had the edge in terms of functionality – the depth of editing that is achievable with the raw data gives us musicians the flexibility to correct timing mistakes and change instrument sounds with the minimum of fuss. Audio always had the advantage in terms of sound quality – a real flute is always going to sound better than a MIDI re-creation of one.
