When it comes to programming beats, most people start off either by playing notes in by hand from a MIDI keyboard or by drawing them in on a MIDI track using the Pen tool. Both approaches work well enough, but the former relies on you being a decent player, while the latter generally results in rather lifeless, mechanical sounding patterns.
