Not so long ago, studio automation was the preserve of seriously high-end setups. After a while, smaller desks such as Yamaha’s legendary 02R and controllers like the Mackie Control brought it closer to the masses, although it was only really faders that could be automated and made to perform Mexican waves to amaze visitors.
