Delay
Delay is one of the most fundamental and important types of effect in use today. Mark Cousins taps into the secrets of its success.
In the world of music and music technology, timing is everything. Our perception of music and sound is inextricably linked to it: from the time taken for air molecules to vibrate (pitch), through to the duration between beats (tempo). In its simplest form, delay is nothing more than the manipulation of time: holding events electronically for a period of time before releasing them back into the signal path. Yet for something so seemingly straightforward, delay is a fundamental component of the majority of effects processors found in today’s studios, including reverb, chorus and flange, alongside specific delay-based effects such as slapback, multi-tap, ping-pong and tape delay.
