Software instrument design, once limited to boffin computer programmers, has become available to all musicians. Software packages such as Reaktor, Max/MSP (www.cycling74.com) and PD (crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/software) have opened these doors by replacing script-based computer programming languages with modular languages based on early synthesizer design. Small modules with limited functions can be connected together in a multitude of ways to create unique instruments.
