Are guitarists finally ditching valve amps and getting those ‘bits’ between their teeth? Huw Price investigates the art of digital modelling.
The electric guitar hasn’t changed significantly since its introduction in the late 1940s, and most guitarists still favour the same four or five iconic instruments being made today by the same companies that pioneered them. It’s no surprise, then, that the vintage amplifier is the guitarist’s equivalent of the classic synth and, like those monophonic marvels, they can be impractical, unreliable and, thanks to an active collectors’ market, prohibitively expensive.
