Re-creating the classic SYNTHS
Ground-breaking in their time and still sought-after today, the synths of yesteryear continue to define the sound of modern music. Dave Gibson recalls the ARP 2600 and Prophet-5.

During the 1970s, ARP was the market leader in synthesizers and, in 1972, the company unveiled the ARP 2600, which was to become one of the finest analogue synthesizers ever made. The 2600 was designed with an educational goal in mind – by contrast to the modular Moog systems of the time, the 2600 took a normalized, semi-modular approach, which made it easier for those with little experience of synths to get started, making it ideal for educational purposes. The enduring popularity of the 2600 has seen a great number of artists make use of this synthesizer, including Orbital, Underworld, 808 State, Joy Division, Chemical Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and Skywalker Sound, who used the 2600 to create the vocalisations for R2-D2
