There are few signal processing techniques that can lay claim to getting as much use (and abuse) throughout the entirety of the production process as compression. Indeed, so vital has it become to the art of record-making that it’s hard to imagine producing music without using compression in one form or another, whether it’s squashy buss compression across a drum sub-mix or the massaging effect of a multi-band compressor applied during mastering.
