Guitar Tech: The live environment. Part 2: The gig
You climb on stage, plug in your guitar, flick the standby on your amp and… nothing. Not a peep, not even a buzz, just deafening silence. Steve Howgill maps a course to navigate around the many pitfalls waiting to engulf the unwary gigging guitarist.
Let’s face it – gigging is not without its fair share of stress, whether it’s common-or-garden pre-gig nerves, an unsavoury-looking audience or a miserable venue manager. What you don’t need is unreliable equipment adding to your stress levels. Trust me, an irresolvable “I’ve got nothing coming out of my amp,” is up there with divorce, death and moving house when you are at a venue that’s rapidly filling with eager punters who, quite frankly, don’t give two hoots about your problems and just want to drink beer and see a band.
