Ever since musicians and engineers first started recording audio onto hard drives (a revelatory process in its time), the demise of analogue tape became inevitable. There are still some purists using tape in one form or another, but for most users, tape-based media has quickly become an expensive, cumbersome and inflexible way of capturing and archiving audio data. Hard drives, on the other hand, represent an increasingly cheap medium, capable of holding hundreds of hours of high-resolution recording that’s quick and easy to access. Indeed, recording onto hard drive is probably an even cheaper solution than using ferric cassette!
