Although they watched former band mate Phil Oakey take their all-synth ethos to world-beating success, Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware insisted on staking out decidedly different territory with Heaven 17. Eschewing big touring opportunities and adopting a Steely Dan-like focus on studio work, Marsh and Ware took full advantage of Virgin Record’s unquestioning patronage when it came to crafting their second LP, The Luxury Gap.
