Inside Synthesis Part 2
Part two of our excursion into synthesis takes a look at filters and resonance, both of which are fundamental elements of synthesized sound. Dave Gibson is your guide.

Last issue’s feature discussed the principles of subtractive synthesis and explored the sound-generating component in the signal chain – namely, the oscillator. As observed, we can easily generate complex tones and timbres by combining the basic waveforms and judiciously altering their properties (using detuning and pulse wave modulation). We are now ready to move on to the next stage in the signal chain and explore the component that enables us to shape – or, as a more accurate analogy, sculpt – the sound generated by the oscillator.
