There’s little doubt that some strategically placed ‘lo-fi’ weirdness can really transform a track, whether it’s a scratchy old drum loop, for example, or a super-dirty synth bass. Of course, there are plenty of off-the-shelf solutions for lo-fi effects (many of which can be found in your Apple Loops folder), but nothing beats the opportunity of creating your own lo-fi treatments. Whether it’s the pleasure of pushing plug-ins far beyond their acceptable working limits or because you want more control over the amount of ‘lo-fi-ness’ applied, there’s a lot to be said for the DIY approach.
