Logic Pro 7 Workshop
From Kraftwerk to Mirwais, the world of electronic music has embraced the distinctive sound of the vocoder. Mark Cousins explores Logic Pro’s vocoding features.

We first looked at Logic’s EVOC20 back in Issue 17, exploring some creative, but unconventional applications for the vocoder. In this month’s workshop, however, we take a closer look at what vocoding is famous for – the classic ‘robot’ vocal sound. But, as simple as the principles of vocoding appear on paper (just vocode a vocal recording using a raw synth waveshape), trying to achieve a polished, intelligible output with the EVOC20 isn’t as easy as it first seems. For example, do you work with the Tracking Oscillator version of the EVOC20 on an audio track, or the EVOC PS Audio Instrument version? And, ultimately, how do you get the results to be audible over a busy track?
