Logic Pro 8 Workshop - Creative Gate Effects
Logic’s humble Noise Gate is a source of a number of unique and unusual dynamic processing techniques. Mark Cousins joins the sidechain gang.

By all accounts, a noise gate won’t be the most exciting effect you’ll fi nd within Logic’s plug-in folder. From a technical perspective – and as its name suggests – a noise gate is principally designed as a means of controlling noise: attenuating the input between notes to prevent unwanted sonic elements being recorded. You could, for example, use a noise gate to tame the hiss on a noisy guitar amp, or to reduce snare bleed into a kick drum mic. However, it is also the source of some surprisingly useful dynamics tricks, perhaps transforming a pad sound into a pulsating chord line, or bringing some strategic low-end ‘tone’ to the bottom of a kick drum.
