Logic's Quantize functions
There’s more to quantization than simply getting things in time. Andrew Taylor-Maskrey explores the possibilities...
Quantization is one of those tools we take for granted on any sequencer with real time input. It’s an indispensable tool for anyone who is a less-than-brilliant instrumentalist. In its simplest form, quantization enables you to rhythmically correct notes according to a pre-defined time grid. Analogue drum machines and step sequencers are good examples of early applications of quantization. A 16-step drum machine would have 16 steps per bar or loop, giving a maximum quantize value of 1/16. Unlike modern sequencers, these machines have a fixed quantize value and can sound rather mechanical, although the addition of a delay effect greatly improves the groove.
